Post-mortem Game Jam

That was a demanding yet very rewarding week ! We both love video games and started learning their production a few weeks ago. It is hard at the beginning to start a new project and to stick to it, we had so many ideas but knew that we would not bring any to its end... That's why we participated to this Weekly game jam ! One week to develop is a perfect rush of adrenaline and really frames the project: a beginning, an end and the possibility of getting feedbacks !

The theme was quite unexpected too. At first we had so many ideas: a cat playing with wool, a dung beetle with his ball of poop, a rolling dodge... But we didn't want to have "obvious" rolling mechanics, and no gameplay ideas came to us when thinking about those. Then the carpet came to our mind, absurd and yet perfect for a (trying to be) stealth/fun game. This is where the developing adventure began. We had to learn pixel art, animation, programming, ... So much to do in such a short time!

But after a few days of struggle we finally managed to get a playable game (or prototype since it is very short and a lot of things have to be corrected).  We are very happy of the result and very proud of it :). But enough talk, let's get to what was done right and what was not.

We were quite good at scaling the project, we had as much content as possible without being overwhelmed by it, and reasonable enough to be produced in one week by beginners. Of course a lot of things could not be done and the list of "nice to add" elements didn't stop growing whilst the ToDo list got lighter and lighter, but the main elements are there. We actually did a lot more than we thought we could.

However, we got a bit late, because we decided to build the project for the first time 15min before the deadline. A very bad decision since we could not build at all, that as quite a hustle but a bit more than one hour later we could upload a playable game...

The tutorial is not complete, the feedbacks we had so far are often that people don't understand the controls. We are working on it.

There are still a lot of things to upgrade in the game: animations could be better, many bugs are not corrected yet (yes you can throw a dead body through a wall - useful speedrun technique), the sound design is very bad (we love the music though), menus are not complete nor ergonomic and most important : we need to add content!

This was a good adventure, but it is not over! We plan on working a bit more on this project, learning a lot more and making it a playable game (probably still very short, but nice to play)
